Do What YOU Want

Do What YOU Want

We are all dying. OK now I have got that bad news out of the way, what does it mean for living? Well… it means you may as well do whatever it is that you want while you are here.

No this doesn’t mean I advocate going out and bashing and robbing people. I didn’t mean it in that sense.

I meant in the sense of living your life on your terms. Living the life that pleases you. Pursuing your dreams. Making sure you pack as much joy into every single day as you can.

Don’t live your life doing what others expect of you. So your parents expected you to be an accountant but you wanted to be circus performer? Be a circus performer. It’s up to them to deal with their disappointment with you. Let them live their lives the way they see fit and you do the same.

It starts with defining who you want to be. OK I stole this from a speech by Arnold Schwarzenegger about his 6 rules of success. But he said what I was thinking. Not what you want to be but who, and definitely not what your parents or friends or teachers want you to be. Once you have this worked out you are on your way to living life on your terms.

As I said, we are all dying. And really, nothing we do on this earth makes any difference in the end. For a brief time we’re here we can engage in people and hopefully bring something positive to the lives of the people we touch, but that’s it.

Maybe you believe that you will have an eternal afterlife and what we do here is important to that, but no one really knows that one. If it’s not true whether you believe or not won’t make it so.

Steve Jobs said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

So make the most of what you have now. If this is all you’ve got, don’t waste a single moment not filling your life with joy. Make sure you’re living the life you want to live.
